About
This site is kept by James H. Tily, a criminal defense lawyer in Salt Lake City, as a personal publication. It is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. It is separate from his law practice.
The method: every figure, quote and date links to a primary or published source. Where a figure is an estimate, it says so and shows the arithmetic. Where a source is secondary or unconfirmed, it says so. Client matters described anywhere on this site are stated only in general terms.
The Spanish edition is a companion, not a word-for-word translation of every source; the sources themselves are in the language they were published in. Corrections to either edition are welcome and will be posted. Send them with a link to the source.
If you or a family member is detained
Call a lawyer before anything else. The ICE Online Detainee Locator is at locator.ice.gov. In Utah, a habeas petition must be filed in the federal district where the person is held, and the 10th Circuit's rule on bond hearings applies only while the person is in a 10th Circuit state. Moving fast matters.
