Agreements and decisions
Who in Utah agreed to what, and when. A 287(g) agreement has three forms: jail enforcement (status checks at booking), warrant service officer (serving ICE administrative warrants inside the jail), and task force (deputized officers act on immigration during regular duties, including traffic stops). Riverton, North Valley and Gunnison Valley hold task-force agreements.

Who declined
- Ogden Police: 'We're not going to be asking people's immigration status.' West Valley City Police and the Utah Highway Patrol: no plans to join (KUER, July 2025).
- Salt Lake City Police: may provide traffic control or peacekeeping; no one held solely on a detainer without a warrant, affidavit or removal order (KUTV). Mayor Mendenhall: 'Salt Lake City Police do not participate in federal immigration operations.'
- Grand County Sheriff, Sept. 2026: 'will not be helping in those efforts' (KSL).
- Salt Lake County has never had a 287(g) agreement in any source found. It honors detainers for 48 hours and rents ICE up to 10 beds under a 1993-era U.S. Marshals agreement.
What the state actually requires
Utah Code 17-72-505: a sheriff must make a reasonable effort to determine the citizenship of prisoners charged with a felony or DUI, verify within 48 hours through DHS, notify DHS of anyone whose status cannot be verified, and notify DHS and coordinate transfer before releasing an unlawfully present person finishing a sentence for a felony or a qualifying class A misdemeanor. It does not require holding anyone past release on a detainer and sets no hold period. Nothing in it bars a sheriff from calling DHS at any time.
